Beware of Big Blue

New York
NY -
3-0.
It’s that simple.
That is the win-loss record the New York Giants must amass
over the final three games of the season, in order to avoid missing the
playoffs, for the first time since the 2004 regular season.
Sunday night, when the Philadelphia Eagles traveled north on
I-95 to face a revamped Giants team (or so we thought), the Rosen Report was
certain; the New York Giants journey towards the “second” season was going to
continue.
They were coming off an impressive 31-24 victory over the Dallas “Can’t win in
December” Cowboys, and it seemed a spot in the playoffs was more than just a
possibility. It looked like a reality.
But then came Sunday’s 45-38 loss to the Eagles. And similar
to the thoughts, that entered everyone’s mind that our season was over after
the embarrassing 26-6 loss to the Denver Broncos, it is almost certain, those
thoughts have returned, after Sunday night’s defensive disaster, in a game
where so much was at stake.
But everyone should keep their thoughts to themselves
because the Giants season is far from over.
Although the Giants failed to gain control of the NFC East
with the loss to the Eagles, and were just sixty minutes away from controlling
their own destiny heading into the playoffs, Giant fans should not worry. And
if you are worried, you obviously have failed to look at the remaining
opponents the Giants will face to end the season. (I will get to them
later) But for now, the Giants are in
fine shape, and will soon be gearing up for another Super Bowl run.
(Don’t laugh)
Last night, the Giants let a great opportunity fall by the
wayside. Even though they would’ve had the same record as the Cowboys and
Eagles, with a victory, New York
would have been alone at the top of the NFC East.
The Giants own the tiebreaker over the
Cowboys, since they were able to sweep the season series for the first time
since 2004. And also, would have owned the tiebreaker over the Eagles,
due to a better division record.
But after DeSean Jackson’s 178 receiving
yards and two touchdown performance, which included a 72-yard punt
return for a score, the Eagles are now flying high towards an NFC East
crown, while the Giants are now heading towards an NFC Wild Card berth.
Even with this loss, the Giants are still very much alive
for a playoff spot. However, the time
has come to dial 911 because they now need help to make the playoffs.
And help is coming from a heavenly “Saint” because Saturday
night, when the Cowboys travel to the Superdome to take on Drew Brees and
company, the Saints road towards perfection will continue, while the Cowboys
find themselves heading towards another long December.
New Orleans 31 Dallas 14
With this loss, the Cowboys will fall to 8-6, and this year’s December’s “choke-job” from the Cowboys, will become more famous than that of Latrell Spreewell’s, when he choked head coach PJ Carlesimo, as another Cowboy December meltdown is imminent.
And come Monday night, when Big Blue is in the Nation’s capital
to face the Washington Redskins, the Giants will be granted with another
opportunity to regain control of their own destiny. This time, it will be for a spot in the
playoffs, and this time, they will take full advantage. After they defeat the
Redskins, the Giants will jump ahead of the Cowboys in the standings, and will
remain there until the playoffs begin, in roughly four weeks from now.
New York 35 Washington 10
After the Giants gain control of the 6th seed,
winning out will be easy. They will not
lose to the Panthers in week 16, whom after the loss to the Patriots, have now lost for the third
time in four games. Nor will they
struggle in week 17, when they play a Minnesota Vikings team, who will most
likely have nothing to play for.
So come next Tuesday, December 22, 2009, the New York
Giants will be proud owners of the final playoff spot in the NFC.
But before then, the Giants must be presented with this
‘formula for success’:
Win (three games) and your in.
It really is that simple. Now sit back, and watch
it happen.
